i've dreamed of owning my own TLR for yonks, and so when my mum showed me her old rolleiflex a few months ago when we were in italy it was love at first sight.
i had no idea what condition the old girl was in, but she looked spotless and pristine as far as i could tell, so i brought it back from italy and chucked some cheap expired black and white 120mm film in it and gave it a whirl one afternoon at home with my favourite model.
my first shot! a little too bright a day maybe, but i wanted to see what focusing on the powerlines outside my window would look like. this is a shot i’d love to re-do in colour film some time.
she’s not a terribly social cat most of the time, but she loves to sit nearby while i’m pottering about doing my own thing. i looove the dreamy wash of light coming in over the whole shot.
keeping a sleepy eye on me. i love those highlights on the blanket in the foreground. so sunkissed.
pulled the focus in to get this fun picture in picture shot. the massive veiwfinder on the rolleiflex is a dream to play around with focus-wise.
sunbeam baby.
i love all the lines in this one - the shadows from the door, the floorboards, the stripes on pepper. you can tell she’s nearing the end of her patience with me.
popped outside to take some pictures of our messy garden. i love the sun catching on those weeds in the foreground, and the big burst of light up at the top. we definitely need to tidy up our back garden but i do love a bit of weedy mess.
here we’ve got the same shot at different focal lengths. i framed this one up first because i loved how you could see the paintbrushes in the window, and the bells hanging from the washing line. i like to sit in this spot a lot to think/journal/listen to music, so capturing one of the views from here was a small delight.
then i pushed the focus out to the window reflection. if i’d put the speed up a notch i reckon the bamboo shoots in the background would have been clearer, but i love how it came out all the same. this set-up would also be fun to re-capture in colour, especially on a clear blue-sky day.
i don’t quite have the budget to try this camera out in colour just yet, but i’d really love to. for now, my local film shop is still selling these expired blank and white rolls for pretty cheap, so i’ve got another roll to shoot over the summer break with my gorgeous friends. i also brought back another lil point and shoot 35mm camera from italy that i still need to finish shooting, but will surely share those test snaps here too.
also hello, it’s been a while! this is something i’ve wanted to have the time to revive for a long time because i really love talking about my photos, but i simply haven’t been taking many lately. that being said, i’ve got another post in mind with some snaps i took from my italy trip that i’d love to chat about, but if there’s any other kind of photography biz you’d like me to yarn about, please let me know. i’m hoping this summer break will inspire me to get some cameras out and capture some tasty slices of life.
