test snaps: canon canonet ql 25

i bought a new camera recently and chucked a test roll in - kodak gold 200 - to see what sort of pictures to expect from it, and i’m pretty stoked with the results! these are all completely unedited and ungraded. i get my dev and scans done, as always, at toi turama on k road.

i try very hard not to get too attached to a test roll, because you never know how it’s going to turn out. but that being said, these turned out SO well. my little goal with these was to simply romanticise my house, and i think i nailed it.

(side note: romanticising my home(s) and conveying love through my photos is a HUGE topic for me, and definitely something i’ll discuss in a later… issue? episode? whatever this is.)

i like how the afternoon light hits our lovely little kitchen.

i learned that the canonet doesn’t let you focus terribly close to the camera, but i still like how this little test turned out. chatting to my mum on the phone while i drew in our back garden.

i really want to get some higher speed film and shoot more moody interiors now, but i do still love what the 200 did to this dim lightning. that grain.

i exposed this one for the light coming through the window rather than the objects on the windowsill itself - so to accurately use the in-built light meter, i pointed the camera directly at the sky, adjusted the shutter speed, and then reframed.

i don’t know if this is exclusively a canon thing or not but it is a thing i’ve experienced consistently with canon cameras: the contrast is so lush.

so all in all, a pretty successful test roll. as of writing this, this camera now has a black and white ilford hp 400 in it and is with me in wellington, so i’ll try and take some moody rainy welly snaps.
